Artist Statement

My abstract and representational work is a blend of European influence of my early childhood, combined with the colors, passion and folklore of Latin America.The animal form and the human figure have always fascinated me.In my abstract work, I choose a color and begin with a random gesture on the canvas and see where it leads.As I continue adding colors, diverse elements begin to emerge; shapes and patterns begin to flow.These works are process paintings – I do not erase or cover up brushstrokes nor do I follow any plan. Eventually the diverse elements integrate and converge, just as our lives do.

My portraits capture moods and emotions, and focus on the intrinsic expression particular to my subjects and their interrelationships. I also pay special attention to the backgrounds, where fabrics, pleats, and other textures add rich color and dimension.I paint in oils, acrylics, and mixed media.
