Artist Statement

In my recent work, I use the tactile nature of charcoal to explore the complexities between life and death, the conscious and subconscious, and the microcosm and macrocosm, refining my understanding of both self and collective experience. I experiment with varying textures and intensities of charcoal to create complex patterns and layers of depth. Dark, velvety black tones draw the viewer into the work, allowing the eye to move through its visual density while encouraging interaction between the piece and its surrounding environment.

I consider depth on multiple levels. On a two-dimensional plane, I use layering, shading, and contrast to build visual complexity. I extend this exploration by physically constructing works off the wall, pushing them into space through collage and form. This dual engagement of physical expansion and visual immersion allows the work to create a more contemplative and immersive experience.
