Artist Statement

Itayu is a photographer born in Oaxaca, Mexico, raised in Los Angeles, and currently based in Washington, D.C. Their work explores the relationship between cultures shaped by migration, memory, and place. Through images of family, everyday life, and moments of stillness, they examine intergenerational connection and the ways
identity is carried, inherited, and reimagined across borders. Drawing on personal and cultural symbolism, such as touch, ritual, and traditional dress, their photographs center on both intimacy and continuity. Rooted in storytelling, the work reflects the tension and beauty of living between worlds, inviting viewers to consider how memory, ancestry, and belonging live within the body.
