Artist Statement

I use a painted mosaic technique-single-color hand-painted squares to investigate how time, physical distance, & perceptual psychology shape how we interpret visual information.
Up close, the image dissolves into abstraction: a grid of color that resist immediate comprehension. This nearness mirrors the fragmented nature of experiencing the present-where meaning is elusive & detail overwhelms. Yet, as the viewer steps back, the image resolves. From a distance, the individual units coalesce into recognizable forms & representational scenes.
This perceptual shift is informed by Gestalt theory, the idea that the mind seeks unity & order-“the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” What initially appears as disconnected elements becomes an integratedimage, echoing how understanding emerges with distance, reflection, & time. The work invites viewers to move
physically and mentally, challenging them to consider how clarity is not always found in proximity, but often in stepping.
